How many hours per week?
Ideally, the child needs between 2-6 hours per day, 5-7 days per week, and 15-40 hours per week of ABA. Research demonstrates that the more intensive the programming, the more effective the results are. The child should have a team of 2-5 tutors to implement the ABA program. In addition, parent’s involvement is an important success factor, as parents are encouraged to maintain the ABA intervention into their day-to-day life as well in order to generalize their child’s mastered skills into the everyday environment at home and in the community.
Mental Health: A Report of the Surgeon General states, "Thirty years of research demonstrated the efficacy of applied behavioral methods in reducing inappropriate behavior and in increasing communication, learning, and appropriate social behavior." The research of Ivar Lovaas and his colleagues at the University of California (Lovaas, 1987), calls for an early intensive, one-on-one child-teacher interaction for 40 hours a week.
